Exploring the Qualities of Self: Weaving IFS Modality & SoulCollage®
Exploring the Qualities of Self: Weaving IFS Modality & SoulCollage®
In the journey of self-discovery and personal growth, we encounter various modalities and techniques designed to help us understand ourselves better.
Following my passion for Mental Health and Relationships I have rooted around for the most suitable modalities for myself and my clients. All my training and self-work of the past 30 years are supporting my work, whether the tools are more left brain oriented like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, right brain like Mindfulness and Reiki or Couple Therapy Techniques.
Among these, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and SoulCollage® stand out as powerful tools for delving into the intricacies of the Self, each offering unique perspectives and approaches to inner exploration. What I find fascinating about these two modalities is their flexibility in weaving themselves with other modalities. Whether we are talking about thoughts, emotions or physical sensations, both IFS and SoulCollage® are enabling us to express ourselves from the Self, with Self qualities of curiosity and compassion which help us delve into our own psyche and understand why we do what we do and with kindness and patience allow ourselves to transform our behaviour.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Modality
IFS, developed by Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, is a psychotherapeutic modality that views the mind as a complex system composed of different "parts." These parts are like distinct personalities within us, each with its own beliefs, emotions, and motivations. The core premise of IFS is that these parts develop as a result of life experiences and serve to protect and manage our internal world.
Central to IFS is the concept of the Self – the core, undamaged essence within each individual that possesses qualities like curiosity, compassion, and calmness. The goal of IFS therapy is to help individuals establish a harmonious relationship with their parts and ultimately lead from the Self.
In the IFS framework, individuals are guided to explore and understand the various parts of themselves, acknowledging their roles and intentions. Through techniques and steps such as guided visualisation, dialogue, and mindfulness, individuals can access their inner landscape and navigate the complexities of their psyche with compassion and curiosity
One of the key aspects of IFS is the process of "unblending" – separating the Self from identified parts to gain clarity and perspective. By fostering a non-judgmental and accepting attitude towards all parts, individuals can heal internal conflicts and cultivate greater self-awareness and integration.
SoulCollage®
SoulCollage® is a creative and intuitive process developed by Seena Frost that combines collage-making with personal reflection and exploration. Unlike traditional collage, which focuses on external images, SoulCollage® delves into the internal realm, using images to represent different aspects of the self, psyche, and soul.
The process of SoulCollage® involves selecting images that resonate with various aspects of one's inner world and arranging them on a card to create a personal collage. These images can be sourced from magazines, photographs, or other printed materials, chosen based on intuition rather than conscious reasoning.
Once the cards are created, individuals engage in a ‘I’m the One Who….’ Dialogue with their cards, exploring the symbolism and significance of each image. Through journaling, meditation, or group sharing, individuals gain insights into their subconscious desires, fears, and aspirations, facilitating self-discovery and personal growth.
One of the strengths of SoulCollage® lies in its accessibility and inclusivity – anyone can participate in the process, regardless of artistic ability or background. The act of creating collages serves as a form of self-expression and catharsis, allowing individuals to tap into their creativity and intuition in a supportive and non-judgmental environment.
Integration of IFS and SoulCollage® - A Self-led exploration of our mind
While IFS and SoulCollage® are distinct modalities, they share common ground in their emphasis on inner exploration, self-discovery, and integration. Both approaches recognise the multiplicity of our psyche and the importance of engaging with different aspects of one's psyche with compassion and curiosity.
During SoulCollage® workshops, we create cards that can be seen as a visual representation of our internal parts as identified in IFS therapy. Each card represents a different aspect of ourselves – the wounded child, the inner critic, the nurturing parent, and so on. By externalising these parts through imagery, we can gain deeper insights into our inner dynamics and relationships.
Moreover, the practice of SoulCollage® can complement traditional IFS therapy by providing a creative and experiential outlet for exploring and processing emotions and experiences. The act of creating collages can serve as a form of self-expression and self-care, enhancing the therapeutic process and promoting healing and integration.
Conversely, the principles of IFS can inform and enrich the practice of SoulCollage® by providing a framework for understanding and working with internal parts. Through techniques such as guided visualization and dialogue, individuals can deepen their connection with the images on their cards, uncovering hidden layers of meaning and symbolism. When we share the message of our cards, we give voice to parts of us which might have remain unheard. We allow our deepest longing to be heard with self-acceptance.
So, I will continue to invite my clients who are on their journey of self-discovery and personal growth, to experience IFS therapy and SoulCollage® as these modalities offer valuable tools and perspectives for exploring the depths of the Self. Whether through guided visualisations and dialogue or creative expression and collage-making, we can gain insights into our inner world, heal past wounds, and cultivate greater self-awareness and integration.
